新潟県中越震災のときの、山古志村の実話（絵付きの本）から生まれた物語で、実話の原作では、
おじいさんと息子さん、そして犬のマリというとてもシンプルなお話なんですが、映画は 山古志村の石川一家、
お父さん、おじいさん、そしてそこにお母さんを亡くした亮太くんと彩ちゃん、おばさんが加えられてるんですね。
とくに映画のメインになるマリと３匹の子犬と主に絡むのが、彩ちゃん、亮太くんという子供の兄妹にしたのが、
震災という辛いテーマを扱いながらも、マリたちと共に映画をかわいく親しみを込めて、感動的に仕上げたのが、大成功だったと私は思います。
